De 4daagse Guide 1: What to Know Before Registration

What is De 4daagse?

De 4daagse, also known as “The Walk of the World,” is an annual four-day walking event held in Nijmegen, Netherlands. Each July, over 40,000 participants (and even more enter the 4daagse registration process) walk 30km, 40km, or 50km loops each day for four days.

History of De 4daagse

De 4daagse started as a training event for Dutch soldiers. Over time, it grew to include soldiers from other countries, civilians, and police officers. Today, it’s a massive event where walkers come together, encouraging each other along the journey. Eventually free concerts were added ongoing for a whole week.  The festival atmosphere includes concerts and cultural events throughout Nijmegen. Learn more about the event’s history HERE

Why Participate?

De 4daagse offers both a physical and mental challenge, pushing you beyond your comfort zone. The atmosphere is truly unique and unlike any other. This is also due to the participation of the villages on the route, many locals provide snacks, cheers or other forms of kindness. The event is easily accessible to people from all over the world, with information and support available in English. It’s an excellent opportunity to meet people from diverse backgrounds.

Can I Run the Event?

No, running is prohibited, and participants will be disqualified if caught running. Speed walking has been allowed in the past, but recent rules discourage this. Always check the latest regulations before registering.

What Distance Do I Walk?

The distance you walk depends on your application, age and gender:

  • Individual: You can choose from 30km, 40km, or 50km, but the minimum (“regulation distance”) is based on your age and gender. You can always walk longer but never shorter than “regulation distance”. Learn more about individual requirements HERE.
  • Group: Group members must walk the highest distance required by any group member. For example, if one person must walk 50km, the entire group must complete 50km. Details HERE.
  • Military: Soldiers walk 40km with a 10kg pack. More information on military participation is available HERE.

Why Choose a Longer Distance?

Your goals will determine your chosen distance. Whether you want to challenge yourself or simply enjoy the event’s atmosphere, longer distances provide a deeper experience. In my subjective opinion, the additional 10km loop for the 50km is not as enjoyable. Unless 50km is your minimum regulation distance or you want bigger challenge, I would choose 30km or 40km route. Usually the diversion is in the morning and most villages on-route do not participate in the festivities. I found the atmosphere on these loops very low.

Entertainment along the way to boost the spirit

Can I Participate Alone?

Yes! Walking alone can be incredibly rewarding, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the atmosphere and meet new people. With many international participants and locals speaking English very well, you’ll find plenty of opportunities to make new friends along the way. That said, walking with a group can also create strong bonds, so it depends on your personal preference.

How to Register?

Once you decide to join the event, visit the official website to check 4daagse registration dates. These are typically open around February, I suggest to sign up for newsletter or make a note in your calendar not to miss it. The registration window is relatively short. Due to limited spots, first-time participants may enter a lottery if demand exceeds available spots. Previous participants have priority and guaranteed entry. If requested for payment during registration, it means your spot is confirmed. If you don’t get in, there are ways to buy a ticket from others—check the website for the latest reselling and transfer process.
