Is It a Race?
No, De 4daagse is not a race but a social, cultural, and sporting event with military roots. Your times are not recorded. The event is all about enjoying the atmosphere and connecting with others. However, there is a strict time limit for each day. If you do not make it in time, you will not be able to participate next day.
Do You Get a Medal?
Yes, you’ll receive a medal upon completing all four days. For an additional fee, a certificate is also available. You can also collect stamp, but only if you’re a member of international walking associations like IML or IVV. More information about these organisations HERE and HERE
The Event Atmosphere
The friendly atmosphere of De 4daagse is unmatched. Early morning starts are met with cheers from students still celebrating from the night before. Along the route, entire villages are decorated, and there are live performances, cheering locals, free snacks, and even bathroom access at some homes. Military participants from around the world march alongside you, often singing traditional songs—a memorable experience, especially in the early hours. The gladiolus flower is the event’s symbol, and you may receive one on the final day from family, friends, or even strangers.
What’s the Weather Like?
The event goes on regardless of weather, hot, cold, rain. Though extreme conditions could lead to modifications. For example during my 2nd event, day 1 was canceled due to extreme heat. Be ready for everything from hot sun to rain, as conditions vary.
What Is the Terrain Like?
The trail is entirely on flat tarmac with some mild hills on Day 3 “Day of Seven Hills”. There’s no need to prepare for technical trails or steep inclines.
Do I Need Navigation?
Not really. The route is clearly marked, and you’ll just need to follow the signs and crowd for your distance category. I have completed my first event without even checking the route in advance. However, if desired, GPS files and maps are available online. In addition the official 4daagse app also offers route maps including water stations, toilets, and medical points.
Should I Download the App?
Not really, it can enhance your experience but it is not necessary. The app indeed offers useful features, such as route maps with your current location, live updates on weather or tracking for friends and family. During my 2nd event the tracking feature didnt work well, but I hope this has been corrected since.
What facilities are available at start/finish?
The main area includes registration desks, where you will need to register before the first day and also check-in each day. On last day you will collect your medal from here. There is separate information desk for special inquiries and distance changes (within certain limits). You’ll find bars, a stage with live music, chemical toilets, food vendors, and sponsor shops. There’s even a display of participating countries’ flags and daily participation stats on “barometer”, making for great photo ops!
Can You Change Distance?
Maybe. You can increase or decrease your walking distance, as long as it’s within your regulation distance. Changes can be made online in your dashboard within certain time notice or at the information desk once you’ve picked up your registration pack. It is not possible to change your distance once you start the event.
Can You Transfer Your Ticket?
If you can’t participate, you may be able to transfer your ticket. Visit the official De 4daagse website for up-to-date policies and transfer instructions.
Are the Massages Worth It?
Maybe. After registration, you will receive offer by email for paid massage service. This service is only available online, before 4daagse start. The price for the message is very reasonable and the massage is great recovery tool. The masseuse will ask where you have pain and cater the massage to your needs. HOWEVER since booking specific time slots is impossible, you might need to wait long time before your massage takes place. There are plenty seating area available but expect you might need to wait on your feet during peak hours. If you decide to partake, keep in mind that it is in big hall without changing rooms and you might be briefly in your underwear in front of other people.
