What To Wear For Hiking – 4 Tips

What to wear for hiking is valid concern. When selecting your outfit, you need to consider few criteria. The longer the hike, the more important these factors are. Proper technical gear can make you more comfortable, but unless you are doing something bit more extreme or use it very frequently, it might not be necessary.

1. Dress for comfort

Everyone has different definition of comfort, so you should wear whatever is the most comfortable. With one single exception, on bigger hikes, do not wear cotton.

You are very likely to sweat while hiking and once cotton gets wet, it does not dry fast. As result you will experience discomfort and unpleasant smell. This is especially important when it comes to socks. Cotton socks are a shortcut to blisters.

This also means getting the right size. Clothes should not restrict you in any way. This means both not too small and not too big.

Pro Tip: It is worth to get shoes half size/ size bigger, as your feet will likely get swollen.

This is a proof that comfort is above all and you do not need to have fancy gear. I'm doing everything wrong here. I'm wearing regular T-shirt, stretchy jeans and converse style shoes. I walked this day around 25km, walking a lot of uphill and even climbing some rocks...yet I was very comfortable.

2. Consider weather conditions

This one is not easy to get right, although it depends on location and season. Is the weather stable or change rapidly? Is it windy? Is it colder than it looks like? If you are climbing hills/mountains, consider temperature change higher up.

Key to this is layering, bring several layers that you can remove or add. Be ready for when the weather changes. Select layers that have multipurpose for example jacket which is both water and wind-proof.

Pro tip: Always have spare socks on you

3. Cover up

There are certain times when you should cover up even if the temperatures are on the high end.

Sun protection – Make sure you cover your head at minimum and wear light breathable materials to prevent heat stroke and sunburn

Insect – In certain areas or during certain seasons you will need to protect yourself against mosquitos, ticks, flies etc

Terrain – If you are going through rough terrain it might help you to prevent against scratches or nettle burns

Local custom – Tight or revealing clothing is bad idea in certain countries. Be respectful to local culture.

4. Go lightweight

This is most important for shoes where the weight of your shoes will make huge difference during longer hikes. Heavier shoes will tire your feet faster and you might not be able to cover as long of a distance.

Lightweight clothing is important when trekking for longer period. It is better to pack two layers which you can combine or use on their own than one jacket of the the same weight.
