Where to buy hiking clothes and gear

Let’s talk about where to buy hiking clothes, but before I start I would recommend embracing minimalist approach. Spending little more on staple pieces that are both functional and nice looking.

I scored this jacket for 50 EUR in TkMaxx in Ireland. I have it for many years and it has great features such as waterproof, windproof and armpit zipper.

Key factors to consider:

Before you go shopping, decide what is important to you and do not compromise on it.

Price – determine your budget and stick to it

Function – which features are important to you

Purpose – what is the purpose of the gear and does the item fit the purpose

Fit – Do not care about the size label but how comfortable is the item

Look – if you don’t love it, you will not wear it

I recommend to build your wardrobe over time, it allows you to purchase only pieces that you love and at best possible price. If you purchase your gear at one place at one time and in rush, it will likely end up being very expensive and you might use the gear only once.

Online or shop?

If you are new to hiking and not sure what works, shops might be better idea as you can try the gear, see the fit and feel and perhaps get an advice from the shop staff. If you are very new to hiking, the fit test is especially important when it comes to footwear.

Personally I prefer shopping online as there is no pressure to make decision immediately and if you find piece you love, you can check different webshops for best pricing.
