TRAIL NAVIGATION

The Romo Stier Loop trail is relatively well-marked with red rectangle signs and white arrows. However keep in mind general direction and your current position, as few spots can be slightly confusing. Signs are posted in both directions, and some also feature maps of the trail. You can even extend your hike by following the blue arrows to sand beach location. This guide describes the trail as walked clockwise, starting in Havneby.

Easy trail with great views right after leaving Havneby
There are many free roaming sheep on the trail

Trail Description: What to Expect on the Romo Stier Loop

Section 1: Starting at Havneby

Begin your hike in Havneby, where you’ll find free parking options. Head toward the sea path and follow the dike. You can walk along the inner or outer side of the dike, but once it starts turning inland, it’s best to climb onto the dike. Along this section, you’ll encounter sheep grazing freely—don’t worry, they’re harmless and likely will move away as you approach. Alternatively just walk around them.

Section 2: Sønderby Beach and Mossy Terrain

As you reach Sønderby Beach, the terrain changes to a moss-covered area, which may not be ideal for wearing shorts. If you prefer, you can alternatively walk along the beach itself. For those who enjoy forest scenery or geocaching, there’s a small, unmaintained forest path nearby. This uneven path is beautiful but challenging due to pine cones and rough terrain, so it may not suit everyone, especially runners.

Section 3: Kirkeby Plantation and Beyond

Continuing on, the trail leads to another short dike, then passing fields with grazing sheep, cows, and horses. These grazers are behind fences. Eventually, you’ll reach Kirkeby Plantation, a scenic area with small hills and swamps. After crossing a busy road near the church, you can extend your hike with a detour to a lovely beach along Kromsevej.

Final Stretch: Return to Havneby

The final part of the loop takes you along a cottage road back to Havneby, completing the 17 km circuit.

The trail goes along Sonderby beach
You can make a stop to admire church and nearby historical fire station

Important Trail Information

Tree coverage: The majority of the trail is open and offers little shade, so prepare for sun exposure.

Mud: After heavy rainfall, certain parts of the trail may become muddy.

Geocaching: This trail is a geocacher’s paradise, with over 30 geocaches along the route, although you might need to make small deviation to the trail and walk through forrest instead closer to the beach, but the forrest path connects to the main trail at the end. There are also two Adventure Labs near the church and fire station.

Dogs: Dogs are welcome but must be on a leash for most of the trail. Ensure your dog is capable of walking long distances.

The terrain of the trail is mostly easy
It is possible to make small extension and visit this nice beach just before returning back to Havneby

Facilities on the Romo Stier Loop

Restrooms: Public restrooms are available at Sønderby Beach.

Shops and Restaurants: Havneby has several restaurants and shops for refreshments before or after your hike. You’ll also find a grocery store, Den Gamle, near the trail.

Additional Services: There are no other facilities along the trail, so carry sufficient water and snacks.

Personal experience

I completed this hike in July 2024. The weather was cool (around 15°C), with strong winds and occasional rain. While I didn’t encounter many people on the trail, the area is generally popular, especially in better weather. There are also numerous smaller trails along the way for those who want to explore further.

Kirkeby plantation has also small hills from where you get better views on the surrounding area
