San Pedro

San Pedro is beautiful bay with sand and rocky beach with turquoise water and white cliffs. It is only possible to visit the village on foot from Las Negras or Aqua Amarca or by boat. It is “hippie” village with nudist beach, where free spirited people set up residence using tents or materials available in the area.

Las Negras is small town in Andalucia in Spain. It is located within Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park, offering beautiful and dramatic coastal walks along hills. The rare seagrass posidonia meadows in this area increase water transparency, causing breathtaking turquoise seaviews. Las Negras is also great starting location to visit some great hiking trails within the nature park.

TRAIL DETAILS

Las Negras

As described in the navigation portion, start anywhere in Las Negras, head to C. Aguillas until you find trail headig up the hillside. This road is visible from far away. It looks like that it used to be possible to drive on this road, but the road is now blocked off for vehicles. The trail is at continuous friendly gradient on wide road. You will quickly get nice views on Las Negras down bellow. From the Wecamp campsite to the start of the main trail it is about 2km.

San Pedro

After initial climb and reaching altitude of about 100m, the trail will flatten out. It starts as really wide gravel road and eventually it will narrow to small trail, leading all the way to San Pedro. The trail is not very difficult, there are some rocks on it, but it is mostly easy. The most difficult and slightly technical part is the descent, which can bit slightly more challenging. Once you reach the fountain area, the navigation within the village might be bit more challenging. Just pass to the left once you enter fountain area until you get to big opening from there take sharp left to the beach. Do not wonder into living areas of local residents. Return the same way back.

Nice wide path along the hills, there are some stones on the trail, but it is not difficult
The trail to San Pedro
The descent to San Pedro is the only slightly technical part, but it is still very easy to complete
Agua Amarca

It is also possible to continue further ahead to Agua Amarca. The climb from San Pedro is about 1km zig zag on technical terrain gaining about 200m. This is difficult hike as it has a lot of scree on steep slope, so it is easy to loose footing, especially on the way down. However the sight on the other side of the hill towards Agua Amarca are truly spectacular. There is no easy or cheap transportation between Agua Amarca and Las Negras in order to make it point A to B hike. Perhaps in the season it might be possible to get a boat. But even if you just climb up to the hill, enjoy the views and return back, it will make for very nice hike (about 16km return from Wecamp camping in Las Negras).

Playazo de Rodalquilar

Nice alternative to this route is to start at Playazo de Rodalquillar, where is free parking lot. Follow white/green stripes on poles and rocks. This is official trail SL-A-102 aka “La Molata”. From playazo it is 2km to Las Negras. Therefore the hike from this beach to San Pedro and back is about 16km long.

If you hike past San Pedro towards Aqua Amarca you can expect these views.

OTHER DETAILS

Tree coverage: No tree coverage, no shade on hot days. Bring sun protection.

Geocaching: There are some geocaches and no Adventure labs along the trail.

Dogs: It is possible to the trail with a dog, recommended to keep the dog leashed. It might be straining for some dogs/breeds. Bring enough water for your dog.

Shoes recommendation: Best completed in hiking or trail running shoes with good profile

Hiking poles: Not necessary, but might be useful for the descent to San Pedro. Recommended if you start at Playazo de Rodalquillar. Highly recommended if you plan to hike the hill up after San Pedro.

Trail running: Nice trail even for beginners since it is small climb and not overly technical, although take care with foot placement due to rocks. Take care on the descent to San Pedro.

Shops: In Las Negras, limited opening hours.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCE

I completed this hike in February 2025 on Wednesday. I had sunny and warm conditions. The trail is popular and busy, I would recommend avoiding sunny weekends.
