TRAIL DETAILS

The trail is marked as green – easy.

You have also option to take local “troll car” closer to the glacier, you can read up on it HERE in case of interest. If you do go for hike, note that you are not supposed to walk on the road where the troll car is driving to avoid accidents.

Most of the trek it is easy terrain. You start on gravel path with mild incline. After about 1km you will arrive to a waterfall, be ready to get bit wet.

Gravel path with mild incline

After the waterfall, the hardest part starts, which is still easy for Norway standard, but might be a problem for non-hikers or people with injuries. It is bit steep and has the hardest terrain of the hike. After this section the rest of the walk is again on gravel and mostly flat, easy walk all the way to the glacier and glacier lake. You can not walk to the glacier itself, there is tape/fence. Please respect this. While I was admiring the glacier, big piece of ice dislodged and fell down, so it is there truly for your safety. You shall return the same way back as you came.

This trail is very popular and is adjusted to suit even non-hikers. I highly suggest doing this hike very early morning or late evening as the whole day buses are arriving full of tourist. I think evening is best due as the glacier will have best light. Nearby village Olden is popular cruise ship destination, so the trail is especially busy on the day when cruise ship is docking there. I started hiking at 6pm and met high number of tourist who were just going down. When I arrived to the lake I had however couple of minutes completely alone. Later only few other people arrived, but I was still able to take epic pictures without crowds.

FACILITIES

Since the hike start is at popular spot, there are many facitilities at the start, including toilets, souvenir shop, cafe, restaurant, etc.

There are bathrooms at the end of the road for troll car. Hikers can also make detour and visit if needed, there is a sign to navigate you.
