Where to find locations to hike

Not sure where to find locations to hike? Few tips for websites or Apps that will help locating trails. When starting out with walking or hiking, you can simply walk around your neighbourhood and extend the time and distance. Go to the parts you normally don’t go to, even in residential areas you sometimes come across hidden corners which you might love.

Trail websites

You can choose from several different websites that are specific to finding trails. There are many of them and they are all similar, usually require login and sometimes paid prescription in order to get gspx files. Often they also have an App. I do not have preference for any of them.

Social media

Get inspired by adventures by others, you can follow specific blog or person or a tag on preferred social media channels. Also YouTube can be good source of information and inspiration.

San Vicente de la Barquera
Sometimes you get inspired by social media. I have seen picture like this on social media and wanted to see it myself, but it was relatively far from my campsite. I walked 27km along nice coastline which was also part of camino de Santiago to see this sight myself.
Geochaching

Geocaching is sort of treasure hunt. After signing up (free and paid version) and getting an App, you can see locations with a “container” and a “log”. You will not know where it is and how it looks like, you need to find it and sign the log as evidence you found it. Very often the caches “aka containers” are in nice locations or along trails. I use Geocaching very often as inspiration to bring me to locations I would have not visited otherwise. I try not to focus purely on geocaching otherwise I might not do as much hiking.  Adventure Labs

This is similar to above but with the difference that instead of hunting for physical container, you need to go to specific location and once you are within certain radius, you need to answer a question. Usually there is a theme and you learn things along the way. More HERE

Tip for Netherlands only – Doggy dating

Perhaps bit strange tip, but solid way to locate walks in Netherlands. The App has two main features, tips for locations to walk and walking events for dogs. Even if you do not have a dog, this website is fantastic in locating places to walk. It gives good overview of the trail, place to park, etc. More HERE

Geocache
I often use Geocaching app to find nice places to hike. Additionally searching for the cache is fun activity as you never know where the container is and how it looks like. For example here the snail is not what it seems 🙂
